Aly Haage: Finding “Me” Time

Share and share some more
Why did you start running?
Well I originally started running in 6th grade for cross country. I was always crazy fast and kept up and even passed the boys a lot of the time. I ran for years then once school was over i started body building for about 4 years, then had three amazing kids. I got into the “mom mode” and started doing everything for everyone else. Then at the beginning of 2022 I said “okay I need some ME TIME. So everyday I make me time for running.”
How did you get started?
When I came back to running I just took it slow. Taking about 5 years off was scary and the reality of “I’m not 15 anymore” was what was keeping my workouts realistic, but also wanting to compete again kept me hungry for more.
What is your favorite Hometown Happenings event?
Well I’ve only done a couple since moving back to crown point. But I really really enjoyed the half marathon in September. I was just hoping to not walk and finish under 2 hours. I ran everything and finished at 1 hour 52 mins. I placed first in my age group, 8th female over all, and 29th in the whole race. I was shocked and honestly emotional.
What goal do you still want to accomplish with your running?
Since coming back to running after such a long break, I’ve decided a full marathon before turning 30 – maybe a couple…heck, I have until June 12th. My husband and I have an ultimate goal of moving to Montana within a couple years, and there happens to be one in Montana right before my birthday next year. Ya never know, a plane ride and a little vacation could be in store!
What are your interests/activities outside of running?
I garden alot. We have a huge garden and I absolutely love it. My kids also help with it too. We preserve the food for winter and have fresh during the summer. I also love indoor plants too. Keeps the house feeling alive and healthy. I love to bake and cook too. I also do photography on the weekends as well – nothing professional but weddings, family photos, etc.
What is my best advice for other runners/people just starting out?
Hmmm this is tough. But since taking such a long break, going through multiple pregnancies back to back, I never thought I’d be back this strong and feeling this great. In my younger days i ran distance in cross country but sprinted in track, but RIGHT NOW I’m getting better times than back then at distance. I’m reading up on different training and love to learn more about the sport. Just go for it and believe in yourself, and ask questions if you need.  No one should feel embarrassed if they’re trying.
