Hello, my name is Dawn Stokes and I’m seeking re-election to Crown Point City Council District 2. When re-elected, this will be my second term working with and for the residents in my district.
I have called Crown Point home most of my life. I grew up here and graduated from CPHS in 1987. After spending a few years living outside of Crown Point in my late 20s and early 30s, I decided there was no better place to raise my two children, Ben and Chloe. As a family, we have enjoyed all that Crown Point has to offer and living near to the square has allowed us to be right in the center of all the excitement of our city.
I have spent most of my life working in the entertainment business both at Star Plaza Theatre and now at Four Winds Casino. I have also worked for the local chamber of commerce, been a small business owner and a stay-at-home mom. I decided to run for council after turning 50 in 2019 when I realized it was time for me to start giving back to my community. I truly enjoy working with residents and helping to make our city stronger, safer, and more prosperous.
It is important to me to keep our downtown viable in an ever-expanding city. We need to find cost effective solutions to the downtown parking issue and make sure our square businesses are being set up for success. As public officials, it is necessary that we listen to resident’s needs and concerns and ensure citizens that their voices are being heard on city boards and committees.
I have advocated for the children in our community by working with city departments to make sure our children have safe pathways to school and neighborhoods have the proper signage to keep families safe. I have also supported animal welfare in our community. I sponsored the Humane Pet Store Ordinance in Crown Point that was passed unanimously. And I continue to fight for Crown Point to have animal control and welfare without depending on the county or nearby communities.
I would like to thank Hometown Happenings for hosting this Meet the Candidates event. I look forward to meeting those that attend and appreciate your consideration as I seek re-election to City Council in District 2.
